Spool crafts are not a new thing, but they’re the very essence of Vintage Made Modern. They’re just as much fun to craft with today as they were a hundred years ago!
The best thing about them is that they’re at the heart of being a maker – using what we have on hand–leftover spools of course, and pieces of ribbon or leftover fabric, buttons, beads, whatever beautiful things to make something new and lovely to add color and love to our surroundings and to celebrate what we do.
I love thumbing through the pages of my vintage fashion and home arts magazines finding articles like this in The Delineator.

Projects listed include a flower pot, a spool screen, spools decorating a jardiniere, a picture frame, a table with spool legs and trimming and a spool book rack.
“Interest in spool work has by no means subsided, and many useful and decorative articles are made either wholly or in part of spools of various sizes. Patience and deft fingers are required to successfully manipulate the wire which supports the spools, for it must be bent and curved to give exactly the proper shape. The spools must, of course, receive two or three coats of enamel or gilding before they are presentable.”
